How To Have A Horrible Homeschool Experience

Friends, read these words the way they are written and then read them the opposite way. A little homeschool perspective.

1) Buy into the lie that you can't do it. Go ahead and tell yourself that there is no way you could ever homeschool your own children. I mean, you probably don't even have the right training and certificates to be teaching children.

2) Only push academics. Work, work and more work. You know you can't have any workbooks uncompleted.

3) Don't take any time for fun. Who needs to have fun anyway.

4) Worry about what other people think. We all know that their opinion is far superior than what is right for your family.

5) Never take any breaks. You can not fall behind.

6) Don't listen to what your children want to learn. They can't possibly know what they are interested in.

7) Never offer praise. Your child already knows he is doing a good job, right?

8) Compare yourself to other homeschooling families. You know that they are doing everything perfect.

9) Try to do it all. "Jane" can do it all...you can too.

10) Never smile and laugh with your kids. You can't let them know you enjoy being with them.

I assure you friends, follow these 10 easy steps and you will succeed in having a horrible homeschool experience.

Disclaimer: I don't know who Jane is and I don't want you to have a bad experience.

ARTistic Pursuits Review

Hello friends! Are you a fan of art?

Today I'm excited to share our newest review with all of you.

My daughters and I recently had the opportunity to review Early Elementary K-3, Book 3: Modern Painting and Sculpture from ARTistic Pursuits. I'm so glad that we did. This review was a blast. My daughters love art and crafts so the Early Elementary K-3, Book 3: Modern Painting and Sculpture book was perfect for them.

What is Early Elementary K-3, Book 3: Modern Painting and Sculpture?

Early Elementary K-3, Book 3: Modern Painting and Sculpture is an art curriculum book written by Brenda Ellis and published by ARTistic Pursuits. It features 36 amazing art lessons that focus on modern art compared to earlier works of art. The book guides students to create meaningful art from their own ideas. Much of the books focus is on the art movements that had a great influence on our culture. There is a materials list found at the beginning of the book and it can be found on their website as wellEach lesson includes art by a featured artist or movement and explains different styles and processes. I was thoroughly impressed that each lesson asked questions that prompted my child's imagination and inspired a creative attitude in them. I felt that my daughters weren't learning to copy artists but instead learning different forms and styles from the lessons and creating their own works of art.

How did we use and what did we like about Early Elementary K-3, Book 3: Modern Painting and Sculpture?

Before even starting the book, I reviewed over the materials list and gathered the materials we would need. I was able to find some in our home and I purchased the rest of the materials at our local hobby lobby store. We used this book several times a week. We tried to stick to only completing a lesson a week, but sometimes we completed more than one. Each time we opened it, I felt that we were in for a real treat. Have you ever got ready to start a curriculum, only to feel like you dreaded even doing it? Well friends, this was not the case with this book. We always knew that we were going to have fun when we opened it and were always excited about learning new art techniques. I felt that the book offered a tremendous amount of explanation, which made each lesson easy to understand. Although, we did find some spelling errors and were left a bit confused in a couple spots, but it was nothing we couldn't skip over. When we would start a lesson, I would read out loud to the girls, we would then look at the pictures, and lastly I would ask them the questions. After the questions the girls and I would read over the project and they would create their own works of art. We loved that each lesson gave example pictures. This helped my daughters, to be able to see these. I always reminded my daughters that it was their own art they were creating though. They were learning the techniques and styles and I felt they needed those guidelines, but I never felt that there was any wrong way for them to do it. A couple times my oldest daughter would feel a bit frustrated because she felt that her art wasn't as good as the illustrations found in the book. She has always been a bit of a perfectionist and it really bothers her if she feels like something is not right. I always reminded her that her art was just as beautiful and that she was doing a great job. My other daughters, who aren't perfectionists, had an absolute blast completing the projects and always wanted to do more and more.

My favorite part of this curriculum was not having to prepare for each lesson. The lessons are laid out so well, that it's really refreshing to just be able to open the book and begin. A favorite for my daughters was just being able to be creative and also being able to use materials they had never used before, such as the oil pastels. The also enjoyed learning about techniques they had never learned before. Some of the techniques my daughters have learned so far are shading, blending, tinting, and sculpting. They are eager to learn more.

My daughters enjoyed the lessons so much, that I think we are going to stick with Early Elementary K-3, Book 3: Modern Painting and Sculpture until it is completed. We still have quite a few lessons to do and I know there are certain lessons that my daughters are really wanting to get to. I love that ARTistic Pursuits has a full range of curriculum available for all ages and I'm thinking about purchasing a few more different books for next year.

I do recommend having something to keep everything together. At the end of each lesson, we gather the supplies and put them in a container used specifically for our lessons. This has helped with clean up and also helped keep all the supplies handy for our next lessons.

What does Early Elementary K-3, Book 3: Modern Painting and Sculpture cost?

This particular book can currently be purchased for $47.95 and is recommended for grades K-3. Also as I noted above, there is a material list in the book and some supplies will need to be purchased at an additional cost.

ARTistic Pursuits offers curriculum for Preschool through High School, so there are many books to choose from. If you are looking for a fun art curriculum then I highly suggest checking their website and looking over the different options.

CTC Math Review

Hello friends, I'm so excited to share a new review today. My family was recently blessed with a 12 Month Family Plan for CTC Math. I considered this a huge blessing because my girls ages 10, 9, and 8 have never really been to keen on doing their math. However, after using CTC Math their feelings about math have completely changed. They now actually want to do their math and I am one happy momma!

What is CTC Math?

CTC Math is an online math tutor program that features 1,400+ tutorials that each last approximately 4-9 minutes. This program is for K-12. CTC Math teaches the concepts of the math lesson step-by-
step. The lessons are grouped by grade groups and then a stream of topics and then sub-topics. This way makes it extremely easy to navigate the lessons. The instructor, Pat Murray, has a true gift for teaching and we loved how he broke down all the steps and how easy it was to understand him and the concepts. He has an awesome Australian accent that my girls and I adored as well. The tutorials feature really cool interactive animations that really captured my daughters attention. I really feel that this program can be used as a full curriculum or as a supplement.

The program features the lessons section, a wonderful parent section, a speed test section, settings section, search section and lastly an awards/certificates section.

My daughters favorite part of the whole program was being able to work at their pace and being able to print out the certificates. I usually asked my daughters to complete two lessons a day, five days a week. Many times they would complete more so they could print out an award certificate. My youngest was keen on improving grades to get a better award and would constantly tell me that today was the day she would get a platinum award.  They were actually wanting to do math and friends, that is an amazing feeling.  The front of my refrigerator for the past few weeks has been filled with these awards.  It's an exciting feeling for my girls to walk past them and know they earned them.  My middle daughter was rocking math in a way that I honestly didn't know she had in her. She has never been a big math fan.  I feel that the awards and praise she received motivated her to want to learn more and more.

I personally loved the parents section best. It has been really nice to be able to log in to check the progress of each girl. My favorite thing about this program is even if I forget to check in, I get an e-mail with a PDF file of the girl's progress for the week. I love, love, love that! Another favorite is that the lesson tutorials are in video form and can be watched again if my daughters are having problems. Each lesson also includes a printable lesson summary that has came in handy for us many times. At the end of each lesson you have the option to print the lesson results as well. I ended up creating each of my daughters a folder to keep all of their math printouts in.

The setup process to get the girls their own accounts was very easy to complete as well. I was able to do it with ease. They are also able to log in without any help and start their lessons. This has freed up time, as I don't have to hear "Mommy, come log me in". Did I already say, I LOVE this program? Seriously friends, there wasn't one thing I could find that I didn't like. I was truly impressed with everything. I won't be sad when my membership runs out. What!? Yep, because I already know I'm signing up for another and another. This is a program we plan on using for a long time. Yep, that's how impressed I am with it. I didn't even know I wanted a new math curriculum but I'm so blessed by this one and so glad I had the chance to review it.

See that smile friends? She is fixing to log in and she isn't upset. Her smile makes me smile.

What does CTC Math cost?

The 12 Month Family Plan I received is currently on sale for only $118.80 it is originally $297.00. This plan is for 2+ students for 12 months. This discount pricing is for homeschoolers.  Each student had access to all the age groups and topics. You can check out other plans that are available on the CTC Math website.

The Wise Woman with Literary Analysis Journal Questions Review

Hello Friends, I recently had the chance to review The Wise Woman with Literary Analysis Journal Questions from Home School Adventure Co.  What a huge blessing! I went into this review with expectations of how wonderful this book would be for my daughters. I had no idea how reading this would touch my heart in the way it did.

So, what is The Wise Woman with Literary Analysis Journal Questions?

The Wise Woman with Literary Analysis Journal Questions is a 160 page, fourteen chapter classic book written by George MacDonald with added analysis journal questions. The story follows two young girls, a princess and a peasant, through their experiences with The Wise Woman. Both girls' parents have spoiled them and lead them to a point where intervention was needed. The Wise Woman recognizes overwhelming pride in both of the young girls and sets out to help them.  Both girls have very different circumstances forming different forms of pride. Each girl experiences a different form of creative discipline.

A wonderful woman, Stacy Farrell, has taken The Wise Woman and added around 16-24 analysis questions to go with each chapter. The analysis questions are wonderful, as they carefully helped us to examine the morals of the each characters' actions.

My daughters, ages 10 and 9, did have a bit of a hard time understanding some parts of the story and some of the journal questions. This presented a perfect time for us to have a discussion on what each part meant and how understanding it, could bless us. I found that The Wise Woman can teach you a lot about yourself and some parts even showed me what I didn't care so much for. I think the key is being open to it. I also wanted to add, that some may have the impression that this book if only for women. This is not the case at all. This book is a great story and study for both male and female. The age range recommended for this book is around ages 12 and up, but when used for read aloud and discussion as a family then ages 9-11 would be appropriate as well. High schoolers will be easily able to read and compete questions on their own. We found that approximately 30-45 minutes was a good amount of time for us to read one chapter and go through the questions.

There is also a section in the back of the book that focuses on vocabulary. We found this section to be extremely helpful. There were times when reading that my daughters would look at me confused and ask me what a word meant. The vocabulary section allowed us to study the word and write the definition. I found that writing them down, allowed my daughters to remember them better.

My Final Thoughts

My daughters and I really loved this book. I loved how creative the story was and how it turned out to be a wonderful character study for my daughters and for me. I was able to really reflect on my parenting and see areas that needed improvement. Perspective is a wonderful thing and one I certainly got when reading this wonderful story. I certainly recommend The Wise Woman with Literary Analysis Journal Questions not only for young people, but for everyone. I will be keeping this book in a safe place and revisiting it in the future with my youngest daughter.

What does The Wise Woman with Literary Analysis Journal Questions cost?

We received a downloadable copy for the review and the cost for the downloadable copy is $14.95 but you can purchase a print book for only $28.95.

Friends, right now The Home School Adventure Co. is also offering a promo code for downloaded purchases. Just use code CREW-10 and you will receive 10% off. The code is only valid through May 15.

Random 5 on Friday ~April 18

1) My oldest daughter has been practicing the guitar everyday this week. I love it! She really has a passion for learning and has been doing so good.

2)  My garden survived the freeze! I was so worried. The weather is crazy. One day it was short weather and the next morning it was snowing. It didn't stick and went away fairly fast. It is now starting to warm back up. I hope the freezing stuff is now behind us. My daughters have plans to sell our extra produce at the local farmers market. They sure had a lot of fun making garden markers the other day.

3) Okay friends, imagine your husband comes home with a surprise for you and it's a .......duck! lol  This didn't happen to me, but it did indeed happen to my mother. :) My girls were so excited and they had to go meet this duck. My mother decided that she just didn't have time to care for a duck so he has now been re-gifted to a family with children that can care for it. We were not that family, lol. We kindly declined. We would have gladly taken him, had we not lived in a city.

4) Speaking of ducks... We recently visited a park to play and the girls bee-lined it to sit and watch the pretty ducks. I had to get a picture. It was pretty precious.

5) Every year my family immensely enjoys fishing. We have a favorite little bridge spot. We drove out to check it out a couple days ago and we were so sad. :( Very little water. It has been so dry.  We really, really need rain.

Random 5 on Friday - April 11

1) It's been way to long since I have participated in Random 5 on Friday. I've had a pretty busy schedule, but I plan to participate more often.

2) I recently dyed my own hair. Friends, this is not unusual. I have had ever color of hair you can imagine. Well, maybe not every color, but pretty darn close. :) I was aiming towards a dark brown and .....ummm it some how ended up black. I'm totally okay with it though. I actually think it looks pretty darn good. Just one minor hiccup. I didn't wear gloves and my hands are just a tiny bit stained. I've tried everything to get the dye off. I can't believe I'm admitting this. I wonder what my hair dresser would say...actually no, no I don't...;) Oh and feel free to leave suggestions on how to get this stuff off...just be nice :)

3) We recently planted a garden. I'm so in love with it already. My hubby built us a nifty pallet fence around it and even added some cool rope lights. It looks pretty cool in the evening.

4) The weather has been fantastic. Wonderful planting weather, or so I thought. I just learned that it might freeze in a couple days.. Now I've been scrambling around trying to protect the plants we have already planted. :(

5) I recently did some climbing with my daughters. We brought some snacks and had a little picnic at the top. While it was a ton of fun, I realized just how out of shape I am.

Curiosity Quest Review

Hello friends! In our home we are huge fans of programs that go behind the scene and show where a product comes from, how it is made, and how it gets to us. That is why I was so excited to review  DVD Combo Pack-Produce and DVD Combo Pack-Swimmers of the Sea from Curiosity Quest. These DVD's made a great addition to our curriculum and our homeschool DVD library.

What is Curiosity Quest?

Well friends, Curiosity Quest is a PBS series that explores what viewers are curious about. The awesome host, Joel Greene, reads a question at the beginning of each episode that a viewer is curious about and has sent in. Each episode then takes you, the viewer, on location to find answers to the questions. My daughters loved that you can send in questions and their minds where spinning with ideas. I had a lot of fun listening to some of the questions they came up with. I have some very curious little girls.

What is included in the DVD Combo Pack-Produce and DVD Combo Pack-Swimmers of the Sea?

The DVD Combo Packs each have three episodes on one disk. Each episode is about 30 minutes long. I can tell you friends, that in those 30 minutes, you will learn so much great educational information. The age level suggested for these DVDs is ages 7-14. In my opinion these DVD's can be used for younger and older ages. I enjoyed both  DVD Combo Pack-Produce and DVD Combo Pack-Swimmers of the Sea just as much as my daughters, who are 10, 9, and 8 years old. My oldest enjoyed taking notes on each episode. It really helped her retain the information she was learning.

DVD Combo Pack-Produce  -focuses on  Mushrooms, Cranberries, and Orange Packing.

Mushrooms - This episode was fantastically fascinating to my girls and I. Before watching we weren't sure how mushrooms where grown. I can honestly say that we learned so much and got many chuckles out of this episode. Apparently some of the process stinks...One of the processes literally smells pretty bad, but in the end it's completely worth it. Great episode and I'm glad a viewer was curious about mushrooms.

Cranberries - Have you or someone you know, thought cranberries grew in water? Don't worry you are not alone on this one. This episode brings you to the field and shows you exactly how they are grown, harvested, and much more. It's full of great information.

Orange Packing - This episode shows the process from picking to packing oranges. My girls thought it was neat to learn that they use huge fans to keep the frost away. They also learned that the picker has to be very careful not to bruise the oranges. It was also fun to watch Joel Greene try his hand at picking. Great episode filled with a lot of educational information.

DVD Combo Pack-Swimmers of the Sea - focuses on Sea Turtle Rescue, Penguins, and Salmon.

Sea Turtle Rescue -  In this episode Joel Greene visits the sea turtle hospital in Marathon, Florida. It is quite fascinating seeing how workers help turtles that are injured. They help to heal them and prepare them for going back to the sea. My daughters and I learned that there are 7 species of sea turtles. I would love to have the opportunity to visit the sea turtle hospital, as it seems it would make a fantastic field trip and learning experience.

Penguins - My daughters and I are big fans of penguins. They are just so cute! We really enjoyed this episode. It was a lot of fun watching Joel Greene try to feed them. My daughters thought it was interesting that they giving vitamins to the penguins.

Salmon -  In this episode Joel explores a salmon hatchery. My daughters learned that salmon swim upstream and return back to the rivers that they were born in to breed and then pass on. They thought it was neat how they used their smell to return back. It was another great one, filled with great educational facts.

**************

So as you can tell, both of these DVDs were a hit with my family. We thoroughly enjoyed watching and learning about each subject. I feel that Curiosity Quest is a great educational program and highly recommend the DVDs

What is the cost of DVD Combo Pack-Produce and DVD Combo Pack-Swimmers of the Sea?

You can purchase these for the great price of $24.95 a piece. Great price for great educational DVDs.
