Native Americans - Day 6 - Navajo Code Talkers

 I hope everyone had a great weekend. Well friends, today we decided to start out the day writing letters and coloring pictures to our favorite soldier for Veterans Day. I was also trying to figure out how to tie Veterans Day into our Native American study. My mil law suggested we learn about the Navajo Code Talkers. We did and I'm so glad. What a wonderful subject to learn about.

So what's Veterans Day all about?

Great Britain, France, and other countries celebrate November 11th as Armistice Day to commemorate the ending of World War I on November 11, 1918. Fighting ceased at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month. Canada celebrates Remembrance Day on this same date.

The history of the Veterans Day in the United States is:

1919 - President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day to remind Americans of the tragedies of war.

1938 - The day becomes a federal holiday.

1954 - Congress changes the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day to honor all United States Veterans.

Today, in the United States, Veterans Day commemorates the courage and patriotism of all the men and women who have served in the United States military.

Veterans Day 2010

Today when I told my daughters it was Veterans Day, they asked tons of questions and I answered most to the best of my knowledge. I knew the basics, but I really needed to read up about the history of Veterans Day.
This is what I knew:

When Is Veterans Day?

It is observed each year on November 11th.

What Is Veterans Day?

Veterans Day is a day to honor America's vete

rans, all men and women who served honorably in the five branches of the U.S. military during times of both war and peace.

The five branches are the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

The History of Veterans Day

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, it wasn't changed to Veterans day until June 1st, 1954 when President Eisenhower signed legislation changing the name of the legal holiday from Armistice Day to Veteran's Day.
