Store Up Your Treasures!

~Hello Friends~
I wanted to share an awesome experience I had the opportunity to witness recently. Sometimes we hear, see and experience things when we least expect it. Some might think it's small, while others might think it means everything.

Last September,  I had a dentist appointment at a college dentistry. I arrived early and waited patiently until my name was called to go into the back. As I walked into the back I noticed some student dentists were preparing their spaces while others had gathered around an older gentleman. I figured he was a teacher, by the way the students were gathered around and attentively listening to him. I quietly took my seat and gazed from a distance. This teacher appeared to be mid sixties in age, wore a rugged look, but seemed well respected by the students and fellow colleagues.  As I sat there waiting for my student to come over to me, I strained my ears towards the conversation across the room. What I heard next was beautiful friends. A moment so awesome indeed! I heard a young male student ask "Doctor, What can I do to have a successful dentistry?" What the teacher said next was so amazing. He told the student the first and most important thing was to serve God. Secondly, serve people not his own interests and he would become blessed beyond words. He then spoke more forwardly to everyone that was in the room. He said he would love anyone and he meant anyone who wanted to, to meet with him at the school first thing Saturday morning. He wanted to bring them to estate sales, to show them that everything worked for in a material manner was only temporary. He said he knew that everyone probably already knew this, but that there was something special about seeing it, with the understanding of it on the mind. He told the students that their education was a mere help along a path to serve and help others.

I tried to hold back tears, but I felt so touched. So thankful towards a man I didn't even know. The courage to stand up and speak truth to these students and anyone willing to listen. How true his words were and how thankful I was to witness his sweetness to these blessed students.

I thought about how I wasn't working outside the home to really serve others. I remember feeling a little shame, like I could be doing better. I often wonder how many others feel the same. As mothers and wives we must remember that daily we work, clean, love, support, listen to, teach, and endlessly give ourselves to the members of our family. As we lovingly give ourselves to our family, and serve them with hearts full of love, our acts will also be counted as service to God. I want to have a servant's heart.

I remember when I was a child, I heard someone speak of having a servant's heart. I remember being completely puzzled by the statement. A servant's heart!? Who would want to be a servant? I believe most individuals think of the word servant with a negative attitude. They believe a servant is a horrible job to have. However, to be effective in God’s service we must be willingly to take the role of a servant. It has been said that the beauty of a servant is defined not merely by their thoughts but by their actions. I believe that without possessing a servant’s heart, we may be tempted to misuse our abilities and God-given gifts for personal gain.

It is important to me that I teach my daughters the importance of serving God and others. I realize that the most important way I can teach them is to demonstrate it as a way of life.  It is good to teach verbally, but kids learn so much from us by observing our own behaviors. I am a work in progress, always! I fail more than I succeed. I just pray that in the middle of my shortcomings, they see my true intentions.

I have found some resources that I would love share.

Garden Unit Study

This was our first year to start a garden. While there are tons of things I wished we would have done differently, we were still pleased with our progress. Nothing quite as good to us as picking fruit and veggies from your garden and fixing them in your home cooked meals.

I put together a mini-unit from resources I have shared below. I hope you find something useful to use in your studies.

Homeschool Humor

"Laughter is the Best Medicine" is a popular saying to most. The truth is, a good laugh really is like medicine. It brings us up when we are down. Makes us smile when we sometimes want to frown. Most all of us, i'm sure, have those certain jokesters in our lives. You know the ones that have that ability to make you smile and laugh, probably when you most need it. We also know those few people that just need to have a good laugh. I'll admit, during my daily adventures of homeschooling, I most certainly need a good laugh at times. If you're anything like me, then you might just as well.

Tangram Fun!

Tangram Resource Links

What is a Tangram Puzzle?

A Tangram is a geometric puzzle which originated in China, and is made from three basic geometric shapes. Tangrams are used to teach geometric rules and can be a challenge and fun math exercise.

Tangrams can be a wonderful hands-on activity for a unit study about China.

Jackson Pollock Artist Study

Paul Jackson Pollock (January 28, 1912 – August 11, 1956), was an influential American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. He was well known for his uniquely defined style of drip painting. He was regarded as a mostly reclusive artist. He had a volatile personality, and struggled with alcoholism for most of his life. In 1945, he married the artist Lee Krasner, who became an important influence on his career and on his legacy.    - Via Wikipedia

My daughters had a fun day of learning about the different methods of abstract art and about Jackson Pollock. Their favorite activity was painting using the drip method.

I have created a FREE ARTIST STUDY PRINTABLE

Forensic Science Unit Fun

Forensic Science is fun! Yes, very very fun. While putting this unit together, I couldn't stop thinking about how fun it would be to pursue a career in forensic science. Ah, a girl can dream. Although, I have to admit, my job as a homeschool mom is pretty darn fabulous. Yes, I mean that.

The board is filled with wonderful ideas for putting together a great forensic science unit. The most important thing for me, was to make learning this unit fun and informative. Mission accomplished.  I even put together a little crime lab. Now that was fun!  We used an Eye Clops bionic eye camera. The camera hooks up to the tv and magnifies objects 200x on the screen. The girls really enjoyed that part. There is a link below to purchase your own Eye Clops. I promise you, your children will love it.

Homeschool Lessons in the Kitchen

You know those days when you're craving something sweet and nothing feels like it will 'hit the spot'?  Okay, surely I'm not the only one to have those days. This day in particular was just one of those days. I happened to remember that I had just purchased some biscuits the day before. I wasn't really craving biscuits, but I remembered when I was a little girl, my mother would turn these ordinary biscuits into the most delicious donuts. You know, the ones that would most definitely 'hit the spot'. I didn't remember exactly how to make them, but with a quick search on Google, I came across The Pioneer Woman website. Oh happy day!  I quickly gathered everything I would need and called in my little helper. I'm not sure how excited she was in the beginning. I can tell you for sure friends, that by the time the donuts were ready to be tasted, she was very excited. The best little taste tester in the South. :) I was also presently surprised at how easy they were to make. Very easy! So easy that I just couldn't stop making them.

While we had fun making donuts that day, we also managed to turn it into a homeschool lesson. Everytime I cook, I try to included my children. There are so many lessons to be learned in the kitchen. If my daughter didn't learn anything, except that she one time made homemade donuts with her momma, I'd be happy. Sometimes, the lessons learned in moments aren't fully understood for years down the line. I'll never forgot making homemade donuts with my mom. :)

I'd love to know what you do to incorporate cooking into your homeschool lessons?
