Creativity For Kids - Create Your Own Books

Today my daughters and I learned that the first American novel was published on Jan 21, 1789.  This cool fact prompted us to talk about creating their own books. I loved the idea of them writing, illustrating, and reading their own creative books. So I created some printables to help them and asked them to have their books to me by the end of the week. I'm super excited to see what they come up with.

Would you like to do something like this with your children?
I have included the download link for the FREE printables below.
I hope you enjoy them!

Create an Invention Box

I love watching my daughters invent and create. I recently took them to a local museum where they spent hours building, creating, playing, and best of all learning. I loved watching them so engaged in the hands-on activities that were offered. Sometimes I forget how important it is to let kids dream and discover. I feel like it’s important to encourage children to invent and surround them with materials that foster creativity. I knew that I needed to bring some of these activities home and what better way to do that, than create an invention box.

1) The first step to creating an invention box is finding a box or container that will house all of your creating materials.

I have created a cute printable label for your container. I printed it out on sticker paper so that it would stay on our container better.

Click Here to Download and Print the label

2) Now it is time to fill your invention box with all kinds of creating goodies.

What Can I Put in an Invention Box? Printable

It's fun to make a list for your children and let them search and find materials to add to the box.

3) This is the best step. Now it's time to sit back and watch your children design, create, play, and learn.

Do you have an Invention Box in your house? I would love to hear about some of the items you have included.

Homeschooling with Amazon - Save time and Money

1) Amazon has a section devoted to homeschooling

Did you know that Amazon has a homeschooling store? Betcha didn't! Okay, if you did, than I'm way out of the loop. I just found this out and I think it is superb! Amazon.com's Homeschooling Store provides hundreds of titles, conveniently arranged by subject and grade-level.

2) Amazon always has FREE Kindle Books

Amazon is always changing, so you never know what deals will last or how long. Right now, I found a ton of homeschooling books for FREE. Free is always good. These books are Kindle editions. You can find that list by clicking on the link below.

Did you know you can read Kindle books without having to own a Kindle?

The FREE Kindle Reading app offers customers:

* The ability to read Kindle books with no Kindle device required, so they can take advantage of Amazon's great prices and selection.

* Access to any book in their Kindle library, so they can start reading or keep reading whenever they have free time.

* Amazon's Whispersync technology which synchronizes furthest page read, bookmarks, notes, and highlights across all their devices. Great Kindle features like dictionaries and Wikipedia that help them get more from their reading.

3) Amazon has an area devoted to educational supplies

I really like this area! I love supplies that help me stay organized and this is the area to find them in.

4) You can save up to 90% on used textbooks

Are you looking for specific textbooks? Buying used from Amazon is an excellent way to get what you need, while saving a huge amount of money.

5) You can make money by selling your used books

If you are anything like me than you have a ton of books that are not being used anymore. As a homeschool parent, I'm always looking for ways to bring some extra income in. Selling your used books to Amazon is a great opportunity to clean up and make a few extra dollars in the process.

6) Amazon Prime is awesome!

* Instantly watch over 40,000 movies and TV episodes with titles for everyone
* Borrow books from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library
* Get unlimited FREE two-day shipping with no minimum order size

The FREE two-day shipping is well worth an Amazon Prime membership to me. Do you have a Prime membership? You can try it FREE for 30 days by clicking the banner below.

5 Ways to celebrate National Bird Day

January 5th is National Bird Day

1) Go for a walk and look for birds.

  • The timing of bird observation depends on which group of birds you wish to monitor or observe. In general, diurnal, or daytime birds are most active at dawn and dusk. They usually are more vocal and very active in the shrub and tree canopy cover. You'll have better opportunities to see a greater variety of daytime birds at these times, but bird-watching can be done any time of the day!

2) Research and make a poster about your favorite bird.

  • Today my daughter researched the Blue Jay. What an interesting bird! It was a fun study and she learned a lot of great information.

3) Make birdseed cakes for the birds.

I found this nice video on YouTube. It explains how to make birdseed cakes.

4) Build a bird house.
  • There are many different ways to build a bird house. I did found a great website that shows a couple of fun ways. You can find it HERE

5) Read books about birds.

My word for 2015 - Content

word for 2015

My word for 2015 is Content

It has occurred to me that being content with things hasn't always been my thing. I seem to not usually live in a state of satisfaction, but the opposite. I really stressed over way too many things in 2014 and I want to change that. I want to be content in all things. While I definitely believe that there are somethings that I desire to change about myself and life, I believe there is beauty in becoming content with what you have and who you already are.

This is going to be my "content" year!

The Bible clearly teaches us to "be content" no matter what our circumstances are. In Philippians 4:11, Paul said, "I have learned in whatsoever state I am in therewith to be content." The Amplified Bible describes being content as "satisfied to the point where you are not disturbed or disquieted". It doesn't say satisfied to the point where you don't want change, but satisfied for now until God brings the change.

I'm going to be content knowing that His way is perfect, and that He brings with Him a great recompense of reward for those who trust in Him.

I was curious as to what else the bible says about being content, and I found 24 bible verses that talk about it. You can read them here

****************************

While I will be striving to be more content, I will also strive to offer you, my readers, more quality content. You see what I did there? I love homonyms.

This year, I have a goal to make the contents of this blog worth reading and sharing. While that has always been my goal, I will strive to make it better.

Do you have a word for 2015? I'd love to hear it. Please leave us a comment below. Thanks!
