Native Americans - Day 6 - Navajo Code Talkers

I hope everyone had a great weekend. Well friends, today we decided to start out the day writing letters and coloring pictures to our favorite soldier for Veterans Day. I was also trying to figure out how to tie Veterans Day into our Native American study. My mil law suggested we learn about the Navajo Code Talkers. We did and I'm so glad. What a wonderful subject to learn about.

Native American Unit - Day 5

Are you glad it's Friday? I have to admit, I definitely am. I love our Friday's. We usually use Friday to review our unit and catch up on our language arts and math, and that's what we intend to do today.

This morning I was checking Pinterest for some more Native American inspiration and came across the cutest idea. The idea can be found here. Below is our attempt at it.

We also read out loud together parts of the Secret World - Native Americans  book.

We are also reviewing some Native American vocabulary words. Click Here for a list of words you can use. I find it helpful to write the words on the front of index cards and the meaning on the back. I then flip through them with the girls. It also helps with word recognition.

Native American Unit - Day 3 - Indians of the Great Plains

Native American Unit - Day 3 - Indians of the Great Plains

Today we learned about the different tribes with special attention giving to the Plains Indians for the time being. We also learned about the many buffalo uses and the ways the buffalo were hunted. We had a lot of fun completing the activities and doing crafts.

Today the girls made pictographs on paper sacks (Buffalo hides). They used a symbols and meanings paper that I had printed out for them, to write on the sacks.

Native American Unit - Day 2

Today we read a great book called Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving written by Eric Metaxes. We made tepees (scroll down to find the free printable template), completed some more worksheets and started on a lapbook. I decided that we would all work together on one lapbook instead of doing three individual ones. Team work! :)

Native American Unit - Day 1

So today is day 1 of our Native American Unit. We have had a ton of fun today. We watched a documentary, we decorated our Native American unit folders, completed worksheets, made paper dolls, and decorated and made cute wearable headbands. The girls are also very excited because my hubby told the girls that he would help them build a big tepee in the backyard. They are excited for him to return home from work, very excited.
