Native Americans - Northwest - Totem Poles - Day 7

This morning before we started school I decided it was time to tackle our homeschool room. We cleaned and organized and I finally feel like I can walk in there without feeling sad. It's not as cute as I would like, but I can deal with it. It is indeed functional and it holds all our learning materials and that's what matters.

We are continuing our Native American unit with emphasizes on the Indians of the Northwest. We started out reading a wonderful book by Petra Press - Indians of the Northwest - Traditions, History, Legends, and Life.

We also decided to make a Totem Pole today. We had a lot of fun reading and learning about them and the history of the Northwest Native Americans.

Here are a couple pictures of the process of making the totem pole.

I didn't get a picture, but we lightly spray painted each jug.

We then used construction paper for the faces.

We then told the story of our totem pole.

Below is a close up

Native Americans - Day 6 - Navajo Code Talkers

I hope everyone had a great weekend. Well friends, today we decided to start out the day writing letters and coloring pictures to our favorite soldier for Veterans Day. I was also trying to figure out how to tie Veterans Day into our Native American study. My mil law suggested we learn about the Navajo Code Talkers. We did and I'm so glad. What a wonderful subject to learn about.

Native American Unit - Day 5

Are you glad it's Friday? I have to admit, I definitely am. I love our Friday's. We usually use Friday to review our unit and catch up on our language arts and math, and that's what we intend to do today.

This morning I was checking Pinterest for some more Native American inspiration and came across the cutest idea. The idea can be found here. Below is our attempt at it.

Native American Unit - Day 4 - Lapbook

Today we are working on finishing up our lapbook. We are adding the final touches and reviewing all the information we have added to it. I have found some pretty cool resources and I hope they are helpful to others.

We also read out loud together parts of the Secret World - Native Americans  book.

We are also reviewing some Native American vocabulary words. Click Here for a list of words you can use. I find it helpful to write the words on the front of index cards and the meaning on the back. I then flip through them with the girls. It also helps with word recognition.

Native American Unit - Day 2

Today we read a great book called Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving written by Eric Metaxes. We made tepees (scroll down to find the free printable template), completed some more worksheets and started on a lapbook. I decided that we would all work together on one lapbook instead of doing three individual ones. Team work! :)

Native American Unit - Resource Links & Printables

This morning, I found myself wide awake at 5 a.m. I decided that it was time to get up and start my day. It's now almost 8 and I'm already on my fifth cup of coffee. The great thing about waking so early, is that I've already accomplished a good amount of work. Yippee! I have been searching out resources for our upcoming Native American unit. I'm excited about this unit and excited to share with you the great resources I have found. How appropriate that it also just so happens to be American Indian Heritage Month
