Polar Regions - Wk 4 - Day 6 The Arctic

Today we learned about the North Pole, talked about arctic wolves, polar bears, the arctic tern, longitude and latitude, polar explorers, did an experiment and watched a few videos. I don't know about you friends, but I was tired, tired, tired today. I think I almost fell asleep watching the last video. Not because it wasn't good, because it was very interesting. I just knew I could close my eyes and still listen. Not! It seems I did drift off a couple times to dream land, only to return to my daughters voice telling me I had fallen asleep, oops! :) I'll try harder to get to bed earlier tonight I suppose. ;)

Below is a video about the Arctic Tern and how far they migrate. Very interesting! My mother-in-law shared this video with us, and I'm so glad she did. Those Arctic Terns are pretty darn cool!

The explorers we talked about today were Robert Peary and Frederick Cook

I usually have a ton of resources to share, but not today friends. We will be learning about all these great things all week long and I do plan on sharing the resources.

Must get sleep!

Polar Regions Unit - Wk 3 - Day 2 - Roald Amundsen

Today I will be sharing some Roald Amundsen and Antarctica resources. Hope you enjoy.

Roald Amundsen Resources

 South Pole

Who was Roald Amundsen?
Roald Amundsen was the first man to lead a successful expedition to the South Pole arriving December 14, 1911.  He famously arrived about a month before  British explorer Robert Flacon Scott and his party that set out at around the same time. Amundsen used dog sleds, his party was well organised and well prepared with the primary intention of reaching the pole, rather than other exploration or scientific discovery.

In November 1956 the United States Government built a Amundsen-Scott Station Research Station. It was built as a part of its commitment to the scientific goals of the International Geophysical Year an international effort lasting from January 1957 through June 1958. It was to study, among other things, the geophysics of the polar regions.

The Amundsen–Scott South Pole Scientific Station is the southernmost habitation on Earth. It is continuously inhabited. Its name honors Roald Amundsen and Robert F. Scott.

I have to admit, Antarctica is way cool! So cool, I wouldn't actually mind going as a tourist. Although, I don't know if I could handle the cold. Brrr....but it would be so neat to see those way big emperor penguins

Here the girls are showing how tall some emperor penguins can be.

Ice Age: Continental Drift

We Learned How Antarctic animals stay warm in bone-chilling water.
We did the Blubber Glove experiment.

Ocean Unit - Wk: 2 Day 7

Last week we dived straight into a pretty fun ocean unit. This week we are still exploring and learning about Earth's great oceans. Join us each day as I recount the days activities on our blog.

Today we started with a quote in our journals.

"I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship"
Louisa May Alcott

We learned about Vasco Da Gama, the water cycle, and sand dollars.

Check out the great resources I found below.

Water Cycle Resources

Sand Dollar Resources

We learned that Sand Dollars are echinoderms (which means "spiny skin") and are related to sea urchins and sea stars.
