Random 5 on Friday - December 20th

Hello Friends, Today I'm sharing 5 random things.

1) My girls recently spent a day with my mother while my hubby and I had some much needed together time. We managed to get a bunch of Christmas shopping done.

2) Today is my mom's birthday. The girls and I took a picture this afternoon and sent it to her.

3) Two years ago, we welcomed a cute little lab puppy into our family. Well, this cute little puppy soon became a BIG dog. I do love him so much, but this dog is a big pain sometimes. The other day I made a batch of deer jerky and I placed it way back on the cabinet. Later on in the day, I ran some errands. I returned to the whole batch gone. I'm pretty sure he probably devoured it the minute I left. Ha! I was pretty sad over that ordeal.

4) Speaking of being sad. It happened friends. My beloved Kindle Fire fell and smashed so hard onto our tile floor. It cracked shattered the screen.  I remembered that I purchased a protection package for it. After about 5 phone calls, I learned that the protection plan does not cover accidents or water damage. It only covers factory defects. :(  Luckily, I was able to find a replacement screen on Amazon for a decent price.

5) The whole month of December is going to be unit study free. I'm actually looking forward to starting our next unit in January. We will be doing a two week unit study on pioneers. We actually did a small pioneer unit last year. We visited and spent a day at a one room schoolhouse. It was a blast.

Here is a picture from last year's pioneer unit.

Boston Tea Party Resources for Kids

Hello Friends,

On a cold evening 240 years ago, December 16th of 1773, a small band of patriots made history when they dumped three ships worth of valuable tea into the Boston Harbor.

The men which carried out this act, were comprised of a number of well-known patriots. Paul Revere, Patrick Henry, John Hancock, and Samuel Adams to name a few.

This protest against unfair taxation was one of the final incidents that led to the start of the Revolutionary War.

Below I am sharing resources to help teach about the Boston Tea Party. Enjoy!

Random 5 on Friday - December 13th

Hello Friends, Today I'm sharing 5 random things about our week.

1) This week I made homemade cookies with my girls. The first batch turned out more like homemade biscuits. lol. I do have to say they were quite tasty though. :)

2) We spent a good amount of time this week on SchoolhouseTeachers.com. Click Here to read our review.

3) I managed to set up a prop in our living room and get three little girls to smile for their yearly Christmas photo session with me. They lasted about 15 minutes and off they went.
This was the result.

4) My youngest and I worked very hard this week on her speech therapy. We are making good progress, but have quite a way to go.

5)  Tonight is my husbands company Christmas party. I'm looking forward to a night out with him. We usually go bowling after dinner and it's usually a blast. I just hope this year I don't accidentally throw the ball backwards like I did last year. Yep, that was pretty embarrassing. :)

SchoolhouseTeachers.com Review

 photo ST-Affiliate-300x300_zpsb38aa8ae.png

I recently had the opportunity to review SchoolhouseTeachers.com. After only a few minutes, yes minutes of looking around the site, I was thrilled! After days of using the site, I was more than thrilled. In fact, I was feeling pretty confident about this year. I don't generally get very excited about online programs, but SchoolhouseTeachers.com has so much to offer. It's the mother load of awesomeness. I truly feel like I could use the site to make a full curriculum plan. I already have my year planned, but I will be using the site to fill in gaps. One thing that I love, love, love about this site is that it is designed for families of all ages. If you have a child in elementary grades or a child in high school, it's fine, they do indeed have material for all ages. I love this and I find it easy to navigate my way through the different areas they offer.

So what does SchoolhouseTeachers.com offer, you might be wondering?

You can check out their Sign-up Page to see all the great benefits of having a membership.

I feel so fortunate to be part of the Schoolhouse Review Crew and be able to receive the Yearly Membership Option to SchoolhouseTeachers.com. While I haven't been a member long, I have already found so many favorites on the site.  For example, my oldest daughter has recently started learning the guitar and they have a page dedicated to guitar lessons with instruction from Jerry Jennings. She has been doing the lessons and I can see evidence of how much they have already helped her. This friends, makes me so happy. She also got very excited about a writing contest they are currently conducting. She had so much fun creating and writing her own story.

There is so much on SchoolhouseTeachers.com, that it makes it hard to narrow down all my favorites, but another great area in the site is the Schoolhouse Dailies.  Here you will find daily units organized by topic.

 photo schoolhousedailies_zps9ba017fe.jpg

The Schoolhouse Dailies area alone makes having a membership worth it to me. It is so well organized. This is where it will make it easy for me to fill in my curriculum gaps. If I don't have a subject planned for the day, I can easily log in and for example click on the daily grammar link. Here I will be able to access the grammar lesson for the day. You can view the lessons online and you also have to option to easily print them. I love the fact that they offer daily, weekly, and monthly lesson plans and when they add new lessons, the old lessons are put into an archive. I think it is great that they do indeed archive. This makes it easy to find lessons that you might not have seen or had a chance to get around to completing.

Oh and I can't forget to add that they have an area dedicated to extras. in this area you will have access to e-books, The Old Schoolhouse Magazine back issues, member discounts and all five Schoolhouse Daily Planners. Eeekkk! Seriously, the planners are amazing! These are not your average, every day planners. These planners are filled with lots of valuable information. Just a small example of what they include are calendars, forms, lists, articles, must know info, and so much more. I'm looking forward to using these awesome planners in our home.

Another thing I wanted to share is that I access SchoolhouseTeachers.com by using the Chrome browser, but I did access it using Internet Explorer and Firefox. The website worked flawlessly in each browser.

Are you wondering what this costs?
Cost per month is just $12.95, but the first month is only $3. Also you might consider purchasing a yearly membership where you will be able to save even more. I personally think that it is well worth it. I know I won't be hesitating to renew my subscription when it runs out.

Well friends, if I had to sum up my review in one word, it would be --- Blessing!
I say this because, I can already see how having a membership is going to be a huge blessing to not just me, but our family. The amount of time and content that the amazing people at SchoolhouseTeachers.com put into their site is amazing. I'm thankful that there is a group of people willing to help and improve they way we connect and learn. It truly is a blessing.

National Cocoa Day

Hello friends,
Tomorrow is National Cocoa Day! Yummy! What a perfect day to mix up some of your favorite cocoa and relax with a good book.  Below you will find a list of resources I have found for National Cocoa Day. Enjoy!

I also learned something pretty cool today:
It's a good thing that cacao trees are plentiful because approximately 300 to 600 cocoa beans are needed to make just two pounds of chocolate! Very interesting!

Making Cinnamon Ornaments - Recipe

Hello Friends,
We made more ornaments today. I really didn't plan to, but I'm glad we did. My friend came to visit today, and was telling my girls and I about cinnamon ornaments. Apparently, when she was in kindergarten, many years ago, she made one for her mother. She claims it still smells good to this day. Yep, I was sold! I also heard that you can spray cinnamon oil on them to refresh them. I thought it was a wonderful idea. :) Anyhow they are super easy to make and they do smell so wonderful. While making them, the whole house filled up with a wonderful cinnamon aroma. I think my hubby was a bit disappointed, that they weren't edible, when he arrived home.  Ha! Good thing we made some no-bake cookies shortly before.

Cinnamon Ornaments

1 cup ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons glue
3/4 cup applesauce

In a bowl, stir together the cinnamon, applesauce and glue. Work the mixture with your hands for 2 to 3 minutes to form a ball. If mixture is too wet, add more cinnamon. If mixture is too dry, you might need to add more applesauce.

Lightly dust the surface with cinnamon. Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters, and use a straw to make a hole at the top for hanging.

Dry in oven at 200 degrees for several hours, or air dry in a sunny spot for 4 or 5 days.

When dry, decorate!

We choose to decorate with glitter. We also added glue and then poured salt on the glue, then lightly touched the glue with watercolors. Those turned out pretty cute.

I also chose to not decorate a few, just because they were so cute the way they were. :) Hope you have fun making yours.

Have You Been Interrupted?

Hello friends,

This morning I took sometime to catch up on some missed bible sermons. I'm so grateful that I did. This is what I took away from it and I hope that it inspires or helps you, as much as it has me.

Have you ever felt like you have been called to do something, but felt like you didn't have time? I know, I have. Maybe, you just didn't understand what was being asked of you. God's favor isn't always what we imagine it to be. His purpose is often so different than we would ever plan. Sometimes, what we feel is interruption is actually an invitation to something greater. I think about how young Mary felt when the angel Gabriel appeared and told her that she would give birth to Jesus. Did she think interruption or invitation? Actually, the bible clearly tells us that Mary was confused and disturbed at first.

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” 29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. Luke 1:26-29 NLT

*************

38 Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” Luke 1:38 NLT

Remember friends, things you could never plan for can become the greatest blessings, because God has a greater purpose in his plans.

I know, I'm going to be looking at interruptions very different for now on.

I also wanted to share with you something that has been on my heart for a while now. I recently started reading a little book called Coffee Break with God. I received this book a few years ago, from my mil. I remember reading through it and putting it on a shelf. Well, through the years the book collected quite a bit of dust. I saw this and decided it needed to be cleaned. I picked the book up to dust it off and decided to keep it out, to read later. That evening I opened the book to a random page and WOW! It was just what I needed to read and have felt a strong urge to share the message.

The first words I read were ---When Life Becomes Routine.

I know as a homeschooling mom, that stays home a lot, I have felt that things have became very routine. The same this, the same that. Friends, I never realized that these feelings could be signs of oncoming depression. I needed to ask God for a change of attitude. I had been falling into a very destructive thought pattern. I realized that I needed to find a hobby, family activity, etc. One thing is certain, God doesn't want us to abandon dreams he has giving us. He wants us to fulfill the dreams he has put in our hearts.

I'd like to invite you to Life Church - Church Online.

What are you afraid of? Fears attack the most precious parts of our life and keep us from living the life meant for us. God wants to help us overcome our darkest fears as we learn to Fear Not. I would love it if you would join me now or at one of the 61 experiences this week to find out more!  You can join us at http://go2.lc/11a.  See you there!

Our Favorite Christmas Books & FREE Christmas Book Report Printable

This week my girls and I took the opportunity to go through all of the books we own and pick out all of our Christmas books.  We have a cute blue basket in our living room that now stores them for easy access.  It's so nice to have them all in one convenient place. We have enjoyed taking the time in the evenings to gather together and read them. So far our favorite books are The Story of Christmas, The Magic of Christmas: A treasury of Holiday Stories, & The legend of the Candy Cane. Our all-time favorite though is most definitely The Story of Christmas. We love this book, because it's the story of our Savior's birth. I have enjoyed reading this book to my girls and talking with them about why Christmas is special. I'm reminded year after year, that the snowmen and elves are fun, but the true story of Christmas is far more amazing and so important in our lives.

The Legend of the Candy Cane is a wonderful story and one that my girls love. It's an inspiring story that reveals the Christian symbolism of a favorite Christmas candy---the candy cane. This book, in my opinion, would make a great gift paired with a candy cane.

The Magic of Christmas: A Treasury of Holiday Stories is filled with fun, creative stories that are sure to keep your child's attention. This is one of our favorites because not only are the stories entertaining, the whole book is wonderfully illustrated.

I also want to share with you a FREE printable book report I have created.
